CUSTOM APPAREL COLLECTION
WILLIE CAULEY-STEIN2021
The collection draws from Willie's diverse cultural influences and passions. We weaved together elements of Japanese streetwear, personal iconography — like the Kansas sunflower and coordinates to his hometown — as well as references to his favorite contemporary artists.
As part of this maximalist graphic approach, we paired a range of type tratments with a high-fashion streetwear sensibility undercut by more subversive, playful elements inspired by classic comic and anime culture.
The foundational collection establishes the core visual identity through a minimalist palette of whites, grays, and strategic red accents. This series centers around the iconic Kansas sunflower motif — a direct reference to Willie's roots.
Willie specifically wanted a subset of the collection to have a darker, more complex emotional tone. This drop builds on the established visual language, shifting into more experimental, surrealist territory and exloring themes of identity and mythology with a sensitibility that feels both organic and futuristic.
The Wild Card drop leans fully into Willie’s love of comics, anime, and contemporary art, with a clear homage to Basquiat’s work. It’s a direct response to the request for some pieces that felt like “walking art.”
